Elmer is a Borough in Salem County, New Jersey, United States. The town was named after a judge, L.Q.C. Elmer. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 1,384. The borough has a total area of 0.9 square miles, of which, 0.9 square miles is land and 1.14% is water. Elmer borders Pittsgrove Township and Upper Pittsgrove Township. The Elmer School serves public school students in kindergarten through fourth grade. The school also operates The Learning Center in Elmer School for infants through Pre K-4. For grades 9-12, public school students attend a high schook Pittsgrove Township.
Elmer was incorporated in 1893. It advertises itself as “The Small Town With The Big Welcome.” From an economic point of view, Elmer prospered in the 1800’s as a transportation center with the opening in 1862 of the Western New Jersey Railroad line between Woodbury and Bridgeton.
In more recent years the town is perhaps most famous for the Kountry Kitchen restaurant located on Route 40. Other eating establishments located in Elmer include the Elmer Diner, Leo’s Pizza Palace, Mannino’s Pizza Palace, Miss Molly’s Tea, Nick’s Pizzeria & Steak House, Papa Luigi’s,Sal’s Pizza & Restaurant, Talk Of The Town Coffee Shoppe, and Ye Olde Centerton Inn.
Elmer is located very near the town of Penns Grove. In the early 1900s, many Italian immigrants from Valle San Giovanni and the surrounding province of Teramo came to work at the local E.I. DuPont de Nemours plant in Carneys Point. Among the first were members of the Montagnoli and Clemente families. Many settled on Harmony and Pitman Streets in Penns Grove. Many people from Italy, especially the small village of Valle San Giovanni, emigrated to Penns Grove, NJ in the early 1900’s. An association called the Italian American Citizens League was formed to assist and support them in their new life in America. Some of the immigrants arrived from Amatricia bring a famous pasta dishes with them.
